Coinciding high tides, storm surge bring flood risk to B.C.’s South Coast this weekend

A combination of high tides and an expected storm surge could result in flooding along B.C.’s South Coast this weekend, according to forecasters.

Many coastal areas are at risk of minor or moderate flooding, including in Metro Vancouver, on Vancouver Island and on the Gulf Islands, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada.

The South Coast is entering a period of “high astronomical tides” related to Earth reaching perihelion—its closest point to the sun—right as a low-pressure system approaches, the weather agency said in a statement Friday.

“This falling atmospheric pressure will help further elevate coastal water levels beyond predicted tides, thus increasing the risk of coastal flooding,” the statement reads.

Vancouver, West Vancouver, South Surrey, White Rock and Victoria are among the areas that could be impacted.

The highest risk of flooding will be on Sunday, according to the statement, but the “exact track and timing of the low-pressure centre remains uncertain” as of Friday.

Forecasters said there is also a chance floodwaters could leave debris, such as driftwood and rocks, washed up on coastal areas.
