Car Free Day and other things to do this weekend in Metro Vancouver

A comedy festival, a night-time bike ride and another Car Free Day are all on tap this weekend in Metro Vancouver, but the biggest event for many will be the 45th annual Terry Fox Run.

Whatever your plans are, here are some events to consider if you’re looking to add to them.

Car Free Day on Main Street

A week after Commercial Drive’s annual Car Free Day celebration, the party moves to Mount Pleasant on Sunday.

Main Street will be closed to traffic from 10th through 30th avenues from noon to 7 p.m. as vendors, artists, businesses and residents come together “to celebrate connected, car-free communities,” according to organizers.

Great Outdoors Comedy Festival

Some big names from the world of stand-up comedy are making their way to Stanley Park this weekend for the annual Great Outdoors Comedy Festival’s Vancouver leg.

Shows are scheduled for Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights, as well as Sunday afternoon, at Brockton Oval. Ticket information and performance schedules can be found on the festival’s website.

Bike the Night

Hub Cycling is hosting its annual Bike the Night fundraiser on Saturday night.

The event begins with a pre-ride festival at Yaletown’s David Lam Park, followed by two evening rides around False Creek and across the new Granville Connector bike lanes, one at 6:30 and one at 8:30.

While participation is free, a limited number of spaces for riders were available and have all been claimed. The festival in David Lam Park is open to the public, however.

Dance centre open house

Scotiabank Dance Centre, located at 677 Davie St., is hosting its 24th annual open house on Saturday from noon to 5 p.m.

The free event is an opportunity to drop in for a class or workshop or catch a “studio showing” of a work in progress. The event culminates with a ticketed performance of Krakow Dance Theatre’s Shakespearia. More information is available on the dance centre’s website.

North Shore Kids Fest

Head to the Shipyards in North Vancouver on Sunday for North Shore Kids Fest, a day of kid-centric performances and activities, plus a market and young entrepreneurs area.

The free event takes place from noon to 6 p.m.

Lions, Whitecaps in action

The B.C. Lions and the Vancouver Whitecaps will each host a home game this weekend, ensuring B.C. Place will be busy both Friday and Saturday nights.

First, on Friday, the Lions will host the Ottawa Redblacks and look to get revenge after allowing a late-game comeback in Ottawa last weekend. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.

Then, on Saturday, the Vancouver Whitecaps will host the league-leading Philadelphia Union. That one kicks off at 6:35 p.m.
