A 32-year-old man from Wiikwemkoong has been charged with attempted murder and a shooting victim was airlifted to hospital in Sudbury following a weekend incident in the Manitoulin Island community. The Wikwemikong Tribal Police Service responded to a report that someone was shot just after midnight May 3. “Officers located the individual who sustained a gunshot wound,” police said in a news release. Airlifted to Health Sciences North “He was transported by ORNGE to Health Sciences North in Sudbury for medical treatment.” The suspect was arrested at the scene and charged with attempted murder, careless storage of a firearm, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and unauthorized possession of a weapon. “Police can confirm that there is no ongoing threat to public safety,” police said. “An increased police presence will be maintained in the areas of Andrew Street and Henry Street while the investigation continues.” Officials thanked UCCM Police and Ontario Provincial Police “for their assistance during the response.” Anyone with details about the incident, or who has CCTV footage from the area, is encouraged to contact the Wikwemikong Tribal Police Service at 705‑370‑3141.
