B.C. RCMP officer cleared of wrongdoing after woman shot, airlifted to hospital

An RCMP officer who shot and seriously injured a woman in Agassiz, B.C., has been cleared of criminal wrongdoing by the province’s civilian-led police watchdog.

The woman was airlifted to hospital with at least one gunshot wound after a confrontation with officers at a home in the Fraser Valley community on June 19, 2025.

The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. said Thursday it had reviewed police records, medical records and witness accounts of the incident, determining there are “no reasonable grounds to believe an officer may have committed an offence” in the altercation.

The police oversight agency opened an investigation shortly after the altercation last year at the home on Rosedale Highway.

The Agassiz RCMP has said officers were responding to a report of someone damaging the home when they encountered a woman outside wielding a handgun and pointing it at police.

The woman then disappeared inside the home before “an interaction occurred and shots were fired by officers,” the IIO said when it launched its investigation.

Officers with the specialized Emergency Response Team arrived on scene and entered the house, finding the woman suffering from a gunshot wound, police said.

The woman was treated on scene and then airlifted to hospital in serious condition, according to a spokesperson for B.C. Emergency Health Services.

The police oversight agency issued a call seeking witnesses to the incident to aid in its investigation.

The IIO investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death in B.C., whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing by police.

The agency did not provide an update on the woman’s condition Thursday.

“The IIO investigation is now concluded, and a public report will be published following conclusion of a related court process,” the agency’s statement said.
