B.C. Mountie cleared of wrongdoing after man shot, seriously injured by police

A police-involved shooting after an alleged domestic dispute on a quiet street on Monday afternoon has rattled residents.

An RCMP officer who shot and seriously injured a man in Burnaby, B.C., has been cleared of criminal wrongdoing by the province’s civilian-led police oversight agency.

Mounties were responding to a reported domestic dispute at a home in the 4300 block of Dundas Street, near Rosser Avenue, just before 3 p.m. on Sept. 1, 2025, when the shooting occurred.

One officer encountered a man on the street outside the home, who police said was holding an “edged weapon.”

The officer shot the man, who was transported to hospital in serious condition. “Nobody else was injured in the incident,” the Burnaby RCMP said in a statement after the altercation.

The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. opened an investigation into the officer’s conduct. The agency investigates all police-related incidents that result in serious harm or death in B.C., whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing by officers.

In an update Wednesday, the IIO said it had found “no reasonable grounds to believe that an officer may have committed an offence” in this case.

The agency says it reached the determination after reviewing evidence, including video from the scene, witness statements and medical records.

“The IIO investigation is now concluded, and a public report will be published following conclusion of a related court process,” the agency said.

The IIO statement provided no update on the injured man’s condition.

Following the shooting, the Burnaby RCMP detachment said it would conduct its own internal investigation into the circumstances that led to the incident.
