Toronto police launch mobile crime-reporting app

Extended: Police reveal crime-reporting app Toronto police revealed a new app that lets users report crimes, file traffic complaints and find police stations, among other uses.

Victims of crime can now report their grievances on their smartphone with a new mobile app launched by Toronto police.

The free app lets users file reports, access crime prevention tips, find a police station and receive safety alerts, among other features.

The app is anonymous unless a user chooses to file a report. Then he or she will be asked to provide their personal information.

"It gives the public an opportunity to report crime when it's convenient," Toronto Police Const. Hugh Ferguson said during a news conference on Tuesday morning.

Ferguson said police hope it will help police improve the force's relationships with victims and witnesses of crime. However, he advised that dialling 911 is still the best option during an emergency.

The app is available on Android and iOS systems, and will soon be available to BlackBerry and Windows users. It was designed by Texas-based developer MobilePD, a company that specializes in apps for law enforcement organizations.
