Victim identified, accused named in fatal North York shooting

Michaelo Markicevic, 67, of Toronto, has been arrested and charged in connection with the death of Daniel Stopnicki following a daytime shooting on April 30.

Toronto police have identified the victim and are naming the accused following a fatal daylight shooting in North York late last week.

The incident happened on April 30 in the Glen Park neighbourhood, near Marlee Avenue and Glengrove Avenue West, which is south of Lawrence Avenue West and west of Allen Road. It appears to have occurred near the baseball diamond at Wenderley Park.

Toronto police said they were called to that area just before 12:30 p.m. for reports of a shooting.

There, officers found a male who had been shot multiple times.

Life-saving measures were performed, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim has now been identified as Daniel Stopnicki, 47, of Toronto. He is the city’s seventh murder victim of the year.

Michaelo Markicevic, 67, of Toronto, has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder. The charge has not been tested in court. Markicevic was scheduled to appear in bail court on May 1.

Police had previously said they arrested a man in his 60s nearby in connection with the fatal shooting, but had not named him.

They said at the time that this shooting appears to be an “isolated” incident, adding there is no threat to public safety.
