Toronto police say an 18-year-old man is dead after he was struck by a train in the city’s east end Tuesday night. Police confirmed to CP24 emergency crews were called to the area of Monarch Park, near Greenwood Avenue and Gerrard Street, at around 10:20 p.m. after receiving reports that a person had been struck by a train. They said the victim was walking on the tracks with a woman when two trains approached from different directions. “The man jumped out of the way to avoid one train, when he was struck by the second train,” police told CP24. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman did not sustain any injuries. ‘Very distressing’: local resident It’s unclear how the teen managed to access the train tracks. Rob Rohr is local resident who was watching TV by an open window when the teen was struck. “It sounded like metal hitting metal and then the train stopped,” he said. Rohr explained that while he’s seen holes in the fence surrounding the train tracks before, he’s never seen anyone go through them. “There’s a passthrough right underneath, you don’t need to (go through the fence), here especially. But, people do what people do,” he told reporters near the scene Wednesday morning. “It was very, very distressing just to know I heard the last moments of a person’s life. Very upsetting.”
