2 people charged in connection with fake gun found at Oshawa high school basketball game

Two people have been charged in connection with an incident at a high school basketball game in Oshawa, where a fake handgun was found earlier this month.

Durham Regional Police said they initially responded to an assault call shortly before 8 p.m. on March 2 in the area of Cedar and Porter streets.

One person met with two people outside a residential building to sell shoes but ended up being robbed, police said.

Shortly after, the two suspects went to the Durham College Athletic Complex and allegedly assaulted a second victim with an imitation firearm.

Police said there was a basketball game being played there at the time. The suspects later fled the building.

The suspects and victims, police said, are known to each other.

In a news release on Tuesday, police revealed one suspect surrendered on March 9 and the other turned himself in on Monday.

The adult suspect, identified as 19-year-old Khalil Adams of Ajax, has been charged with robbery, assault, possession of weapon dangerous, carrying a concealed weapon, two counts of disguise with intent and three counts of breach of probation.

Police said Adams was on weapons prohibition conditions during the incidents.

The other suspect cannot be named as he is 17 years old. He has been charged with robbery, disguise with intent and failure to comply with a release order. Police noted the teen was on conditions not to use any online marketplace apps.
