Woman charged after child dies on Sask. Cree Nation 

A 67-year-old woman is facing multiple charges following the death of a child on Beardy’s and Okemasis Cree Nation.

On May 10, officers with Rosthern RCMP responded to a report of a child in medical distress at a home on the First Nation, about 80 kilometres north of Saskatoon.

EMS attended and declared the child, who was under the age of 12, dead at the scene.

Police say further investigation, along with consultations with the Saskatchewan Coroners Service, determined the death was suspicious and the Saskatchewan RCMP Saskatoon Serious Crimes Unit took over the investigation.

RCMP say officers arrested the woman the same day on Beardy’s and Okemasis Cree Nation. She is charged with manslaughter, criminal negligence causing death, failure to provide the necessities of life and abandoning a child.

Police are not releasing the names of the child or the accused to protect the child’s identity, and in case a publication ban is ordered.

The accused made her first appearance in Saskatoon provincial court on June 11. She is scheduled to appear in court in Rosthern on June 17.

RCMP say several specialized units, including the homicide investigation team and other serious crimes units, assisted with the investigation.
