Sask. RCMP suspends 7 drivers in northern traffic blitz

The RCMP is celebrating after getting multiple intoxicated drivers in the La Ronge area off the road following a second traffic safety blitz in northern Saskatchewan earlier this month.

Traffic services officers from across the province gathered in Grandmother’s Bay from Feb. 13 to 15 for the enforcement campaign, organizing check stops south of Missinipe and near the junction to Stanley Mission, according to a Sask. RCMP news release.

Of the 334 vehicles stopped and sobriety tested, the RCMP says officers issued 144 tickets, primarily for speeding, and suspended seven driver’s licenses – two for alcohol consumption, four for drug consumption, and one for driving more than 50 kilometres an hour over the speed limit.

“These results tell me Saskatchewan RCMP Traffic Services contributed to making northern communities safer that weekend. Highway 102 leads to several northern communities – including Black Lake, Stony Rapids, Fond Du Lac, Wollaston Lake and Stanley Mission – and to the snowmobile poker derby in Grandmother’s Bay that took place that weekend,” said Traffic Services Staff Sgt. Jason Sauve.

“It’s pretty rewarding to be able to make a difference for travellers and residents of several northern communities at the same time.”

The RCMP says the campaign also served to remind commuters of safe driving behaviours.
