Sask. Polytech announces more layoffs

Saskatchewan Polytechnic has announced more staffing cuts, laying off 23 full‑time and part‑time employees.

“Additional workforce adjustments may be required in the spring,” Saskatchewan Polytechnic said in the notice issued on Feb. 3.

Sask. Polytech has not shared specific positions, departments or programs impacted, but it says that the school faces significant challenges in the international education landscape.

“These factors have influenced international and domestic recruitment and contributed to revenue shortfalls,” the statement said.

“We will continue to invest resources where they deliver the greatest benefit to students and employees. Throughout this period, our focus is on the future and on our mission, to inspire success in every learning journey.”

These latest cutbacks are in addition to 100 layoffs that happened throughout 2025.

Sask. Polytech president Larry Rosia said at the time that the layoffs represented a 10 per cent reduction in its out‑of‑scope workforce.

Rosia said alongside the layoffs, a number of departments and faculties are being dissolved or merged.

“These are difficult decisions to make as they impact our colleagues’ employment. We are deeply grateful for the contributions and dedication of those affected. Their work has been valued and appreciated by all of us at Sask. Polytech,” said Rosia.

In December 2024, the union expressed concerns over a 68 per cent growth in the number of management positions under his leadership, while the rest of the workforce grew by only three per cent.

The union accused Rosia — who made a salary of $563,764 in 2024, according to public disclosures — of laying off in‑scope employees to help cover the cost of new management positions.
