Heavy rain expected in Sault Ste. Marie on Monday evening, into Tuesday

Up to 25 mm of rain could fall in Sault Ste. Marie and St. Joseph Island, beginning Monday evening and extending into Tuesday morning.

Environment Canada issued a special weather statement that said the still-frozen or saturated ground in the area “has a reduced ability to absorb this rainfall.”

“Locally higher amounts possible beginning tonight and diminishing Tuesday morning or afternoon,” the statement said.

“Confidence is low regarding rainfall amounts, but the highest amounts are most likely closer to Lake Superior. Rainfall warnings may be issued for some regions. Water may pool on roads and in low-lying areas.”

Residents are reminded not to drive through flooded roadways and to watch for washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts.
