Regina police pleased with biometric monitoring program, claim 5 lives saved as a result

WATCH: The Regina Police Commissioners revealed a successful first year with biomonitoring sensors in 10 of their holding cells.

Last March, the Regina Police Service (RPS) began a one-year program to operate biometric monitoring sensors in 10 of its holding cells. The results of that program has impressed the service.

The sensors were installed on the roof of the seven male and three female cells at RPS Headquarters and were used to detect issues such as respiratory rates and sudden changes in movements.

“We may not always be able to tell by looking at someone that they are suffering a medical emergency,” RPS Sgt. Dave Kliman explained.

“So, this provides another layer of protection to detainees. The health and safety of the people that we care for is our highest priority.”

Over the span of one year, over 7,600 people spent time in the holding cells at RPS Headquarters.

Following the long-term study, the service says it is now planning to continue with the sensors going forward.

According to RPS, the sensors were responsible for preventing five deaths.

Typically, staff conduct stall inspections every 15 minutes or so. The service did note that in many cases detainees may have previous health issues, are under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or may have potential suicidal motives.

Tracking the heart and respiratory rates of those in the cells, the sensors set off an alarm if triggered, allowing officers and medical personnel to respond more quickly.

In terms of the cost, the set of ten units accounted for $35,000.

“I think that the benefit is very clear, after the first year, that this technology is well worth the money,” Kliman noted.

“Although you can’t put a price on human health.”
