‘Mothers, sisters, grandmothers, daughters’: Walk to honour MMIWG2S+ held in Regina

Hundreds gathered in Regina for the third annual Honouring Their Spirits smudge walk ahead of Red Dress Day.

Ahead of Red Dress Day, hundreds of people gathered in Regina on Friday to walk in honour of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two Spirit People (MMIWG2S+).

The third annual Honouring their Spirits smudge walk and gathering was a partnership between the Heritage Community Association, Carmichael Outreach, the Friendship Centre, and the Fransaskois Association.

The day began with a pipe ceremony and breakfast, followed by powwow dancers and drum group performances.

Wendy Miller, executive director of the Heritage Community Association, explained the significance of the day.

“We’re just acknowledging that we’re here in solidarity with those who are experiencing that, and walking to say that these folks have families, these are mothers, sisters, grandmothers, daughters, and we just want everyone to come home and to be safe with their families.” she said.

Organizers say participation in the walk is growing each year and plan to continue the annual event.
