What’s playing this weekend: May 1-3

For those thinking about a new movie this weekend, film critic Matt Demers, A.K.A. Mr. Hollywood, is here to help.

Demers joined CTV’s Your Morning Ottawa on Friday to offer his thoughts on three new films playing in theatres this weekend.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 (Rated PG-13)

With a new designer look in every scene, Mr. Hollywood says this sequel, arriving 20 years after the original, is “a heck of a lot of fun” and will deliver on fan expectations.

“It’s witty and it’s sleek and it stylish,” Demers said.

“It’s also got a nice thing to say about today’s media landscape.”

The film stars Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt, and was directed by David Frankel.

Hokum (Rated R)

Mr. Hollywood said this film should land well with fans of the horror genre.

“It’s creepy folklore. It’s set in Ireland. It’s dripping with dread-soaked atmosphere, and it’s a really haunting experience, and it’s got a great performance by Adam Scott,” Demers said. “I do recommend.”

The film stars Scott, Peter Coonan and David Wilmot. “Hokum” was written and directed by Damian McCarthy.

Deep Water (Rated R)

Those looking for a popcorn movie with plenty of suspense, may want to check out “Deep Water.”

“You’ve got the plane disaster, but then you’ve got also got a shark survival tied into one. There’s a whole lot of set pieces, and you’ll be on the edge of your seat. I liked it,” Demers said.

“Deep Water” stars Aaron Eckhart, Ben Kingsley and Angus Simpson. It is directed by Renny Harlin.
