What’s playing this weekend: April 24-26

Friday means new movies in theatres and streaming at home! Matt Demers, Mr. Hollywood, gives us his picks for what you can check out this weekend!

It’s a new weekend, which means there’s a new slate of film reviews from Matt Demers, A.K.A. Mr. Hollywood.

Demers joined CTV’s Your Morning Ottawa on Friday to offer his thoughts on three new films you can catch in theatres this weekend.

Michael (Rated PG-13)

Mr. Hollywood says this musical biopic has some bright spots but shies away from of the most controversial elements of the singer’s life.

“Here’s the thing, the movie, I think, is a little too safe, little sanitized, where they scrub away all the controversy,” he said. “They’re not wrong, because this movie doesn’t go there. It actually ends in the late 80s before the accusations came out.”

Mr. Hollywood says the film will satisfy fans of Michael Jackson’s music and had praise for the film’s cast, including the king of pop’s nephew, Jaafar Jackson.

“You’re watching him and he just embodies Michael. So, they hit the jackpot, like I said, with the casting of Jaafar Jackson,” Demers said.

The film was directed by Antoine Fuqua and stars Jackson, Nia Long and Colman Domingo.

Fuze (Rated R)

According to Mr. Hollywood, this film will take viewers on a “lovely ride with a lovely cast,” and should be a homerun for fans of the genre.

“I love this movie. I can’t recommend this enough because you don’t get these movies very often and this one’s sleek, high energy. It’s packed with confidence, style and twists,” he said.

The film is directed by David Mackenzie and stars Aaron Taylor-Johson, Theo James and Sam Worthington.

Mother Mary (Rated R)

Those seeking something a little different, might want to check out “Mother Mary.”

“It’s about this affair that took place between a pop singer, Mary, and her fashion designer, Sam. But as you can see, it’s told with great style with a great cast, including Anne Hathaway,” Mr. Hollywood said.

Demers says the film is a challenging watch, but hypnotic.

“It’s uncanny at times, but it stays with you. It’s a heavy film,” he said.

“I do recommend this but its going to take some challenging thoughts to kind of figure it all out.”

The film is written and directed by David Lowery and stars Hathaway, Michaela Coel and Hunter Schafer.
