Mahogany house fire prompts evacuations amid concerns wind will spread flames

The Calgary Fire Department says flames at a Mahogany house fire spread quickly on Friday due to powerful wind gusts.

Firefighters were called to a blaze in the 0-100 block of Mahogany Square S.E. just before 11:30 a.m.

Crews arrived to find flames eating away at the two-storey home.

With wind gusts reaching up to 80 km/h, extra firefighters were called in to help prevent the flames from moving to neighbouring homes.

Several houses were evacuated as a precaution while crews extinguished the flames with hoses and water towers.

Officials say the home where the fire originated was empty at the time.

No injuries were reported.

The fast-moving fire burned through the home’s roof but didn’t spread to other properties.
