What’s playing this weekend: April 10-12

If you’re looking for a movie to watch this weekend, film reviewer Matt Demers, A.K.A. Mr. Hollywood, has you covered.

Demers joined CTV’s Your Morning Ottawa on Friday to share his thoughts on three new movies you can watch in theatres this weekend.

You, Me & Tuscany (Rated PG-13)

Mr. Hollywood says this rom com will be a hit with fans of the genre.

“If you like rom coms, you’re going to love it because its unapologetic,” Demers said. “It’s kind of cheesy, sweet.”

The film is led by Halle Bailey, who played Ariel in 2023’s “The Little Mermaid,” and Regé-Jean Page, of “Bridgerton” fame.

“She’s here and she’s kind of thrust into this fairy tale scenario that could go wrong or could go absolutely right. This movie, like I said, it doubles down on what rom coms are, and if you like that, then this is going to make you feel great at the end,” Demers said.

“At my screening a lot of swooning, especially for Regé-Jean Page.”

The film stars Bailey, Page and Marco Calvani and was directed by Kat Coiro.

Exit 8 (Rated PG-13)

Based on a 2023 video game, this is a mind-bending film from Japan about a man stuck in an endless subway tunnel.

“This is twisted psychological thriller-horror, it’s going to put you in this existential dread watching it, because this character, he can’t escape,” he said.

“He’s got to look for anomalies. He’s meeting strange people along the way. It’s a movie that has a lot more, I want to tip-toe around the spoilers because I really did enjoy it. I enjoyed that its kind of tedious in design. The anxiety and the existential dread are there.”

The film stars Kazunari Nonomiya, Yamato Kochi and Naru Asanuma. “Exit 8” was directed by Genki Kawamura and is playing with English subtitles.

Faces of Death (Rated R)

This new horror flick tackles some modern and pertinent themes, Mr. Hollywood says.

“It kind of takes a sharp look at the digital age. It’s a commentary on our current relationship with real life violence and that kind of voyeurism aspect to it, so I like that,” Demers said.

While it doesn’t reinvent the genre, Mr. Hollywood says there are aspects to the film he enjoyed.

“It does get gruesome, if that’s not your thing, don’t watch,” he said.

The film stars Barbie Ferreira, Dacre Montgomery and Josie Totah. “Faces of Death” is directed by Daniel Goldhaber.
