Suspect in Calabogie, Ont. homicide arrested in Winnipeg: OPP

Ontario Provincial Police say a man has been arrested on charges of first-degree murder in connection with a homicide in the Calabogie area last month.

Police say a person’s body was found on Lanark Road in Greater Madawaska Township on May 6. The victim was later identified as 61-year-old Geraldine Fulcher of Calabogie. Her death was deemed a homicide.

An investigation later found the suspect had possible ties to a threat towards a business in downtown Winnipeg.

OPP say the suspect was alleged to have made threats to the business and its employees and “expressed a willingness to engage in a violent confrontation with police.” Police say they are not releasing the name of the business for privacy reasons.

On May 12, the Winnipeg Police Service was informed by OPP that the suspect was in Winnipeg and possibly in possession of a firearm. Winnipeg police officers located the suspect on Portage Avenue and he was arrested at the scene.

Officers seized a shotgun, ammunition, additional weapons and three jerrycans of gasoline, OPP say.

Winnipeg police say Graham Mlodozenec, 52, of Calabogie, faces eight charges, including:

• Possession of a loaded prohibited or restricted firearm
• Possession of a weapon
• Uttering threats - cause death or bodily harm
• Uttering threats - damage property
• Unauthorized possession of a firearm in motor vehicle
• Unauthorized possession of a firearm
• Careless storage of firearm, ammunition, prohibited weapon or device
• Possession of incendiary material

On Monday, Mlodozenec was transferred into OPP custody and was charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder in connection with Fulcher’s death.

“This investigation demonstrates the seriousness with which police respond to potential threats and the importance of strong cross-provincial collaboration,” OPP Insp. Jason Winser said in a news release Wednesday.

“Through combined police efforts, an arrest has been made in Geraldine’s homicide and additional harm was prevented. We thank the public for their patience and the Winnipeg Police Service for their swift action.”

An investigation continues.

Investigators are urging anyone with information to contact OPP.
