Special weather statement: 20 to 30 millimetres of rain expected in Ottawa

Environment Canada issued a special weather statement for the Ottawa area, warning of 20 to 30 millimetres of rain beginning on Sunday.

According to the statement, the rainfall will begin late in the afternoon and continue into Monday afternoon. The ground may have trouble absorbing water due to heavy saturation or freezing, and parts of the Ottawa region may experience thunderstorms.

“There remains uncertainty regarding exact rainfall amounts. Rainfall warnings may be issued for some areas,” Environment Canada wrote.

The organization predicts that the rain will come to a halt on Monday before another bout of heavy rain arrives on Tuesday.

According to the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority, the Rideau River is currently in a flood watch. A flood watch is also in effect along the Ottawa River from Pembroke to Arnprior.

Forecast

On Sunday, the temperature is expected to reach a high of 8 C, and the overnight low is expected to be 6 C.

On Monday, expect rain and a high of 16 C.

The forecast for Tuesday predicts a temperature high of 12 C and a 40 per cent chance of rain.

On Wednesday, expect a cloudy day with a high of 19 C.
