Three people were seriously injured after a two-vehicle crash in Ottawa’s rural west end on Monday afternoon. First responders were called to Ormrod Road in the village of Ashton just south of Highway 7 after a collision between a pickup truck pulling a utility trailer and an SUV shortly before 2 p.m. Ottawa Paramedic Service Nicolas Guertin says firefighters, police, Lanark County ambulance and Ornge Air ambulance assisted in responding to the scene. A man in his 60s was trapped inside the pickup and had to be extricated by Ottawa firefighters. Fire crews removed the roof of the vehicle and found the man’s legs were pinned beneath the steering wheel. “Crews used powerful hydraulic tools to perform a steering wheel lift, raising the steering column and freeing the occupant’s legs,” said Ottawa Fire Services Public Information Officer Nick DeFazio in a social media post. After cutting the man’s seatbelt and removing him from the vehicle, fire crews transported the man to the roadway. “The occupant had sustained a compound fracture so Firefighters immediately applied a tourniquet to control the bleeding,” DeFazio said. The man was transported to hospital by Lanark County paramedics in serious but stable condition, according to paramedics. A woman in her 30s in the same vehicle was also taken to hospital by ambulance in serious but stable condition, Guertin says. A man in his 70s inside the SUV was airlifted to hospital by Ornge Air ambulance in serious but stable condition. Ormrod Road was closed for several hours as police worked to clear the scene. The road has since reopened. The scene is located about 45 kilometres west of downtown Ottawa.
