Worker seriously injured after construction collapse in Brockville, Ont.

Ottawa firefighters were sent to Brockville to assist in a rescue operation after a building under construction collapsed. CTV’s Stefan Keyes reports.

Brockville Police say a worker suffered serious injuries after he was pinned under concrete at a construction site for hours Wednesday afternoon.

Police spokesperson Insp. Darryl Boyd tells CTV News officers received a 911 call regarding the incident on Windsor Drive at approximately 12:45 p.m.

Boyd says part of a stairwell of the four-storey structure had fallen onto a worker at about 12:30 p.m. and trapped him underneath.

An extensive rescue operation was initiated with fire, police and firefighters from other jurisdictions, including Ottawa, being called to the scene.

The worker was rescued at approximately 4:20 p.m., Boyd said, just under four hours after the collapse.

A man in his 20s was airlifted by Orgne Air ambulance to Kingston General Hospital with life-threatening injuries, he said.

An investigation with the Ministry of Labour continues.

“A ministry inspector attended the scene the same day. The employer, DBM Contracting (Ottawa Inc.), was issued two orders under the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA). As the investigation is ongoing, no further details are available at this time,” the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development said in a statement to CTV News Ottawa on Friday.

Boyd commended the work of emergency services who were quick to step in to help. Fire crews from Ottawa are part of a provincial task force that can be called on to help other municipalities.

“It is pretty impressive to see all the agencies that stepped in to help and provide assistance,” he said.
