Ontario Provincial Police are reminding drivers to put the cellphone down while driving on Ottawa roads. Police posted a photo with four drivers caught by officers using a handheld device while driving on Highway 417. “Ottawa OPP continue to see a large number of drivers using their cellphones while driving,” OPP Const. Michael Fathi said on X. “This is especially true during high volume traffic caused by the lane closures along Hwy. 417.” The drivers were charged with distracted driving, which includes a $615 fine, three demerit points and a three-day driving suspension upon conviction. “Distracted driving remains the number one cause of serious and fatal collisions in Ontario,” Fathi said. “Leave the phone alone!” There are lane reductions on Highway 417 in the Woodroffe and Pinecrest area due to construction as part of the Stage 2 light-rail transit construction.
