Fire damages commercial building in Old Hull

Police in Gatineau, Que. are investigating an early morning fire that damaged a commercial building in Old Hull.

Emergency crews responded to a fire that broke out on Laval Street in Hull shortly after 5 a.m. Firefighters remained on the scene early Tuesday afternoon. The fire was officially declared under control at 1:54 p.m.

Several businesses were located near where the fire started, according to police.

In a news release, the Gatineau Fire Service said firefighters were able to protect two nearby restaurants from the flames. The blaze caused an estimated $500,000 in damage.

Nearly 60 firefighters were deployed to the scene, the fire department said.

A Gatineau police spokesperson said since the cause of the fire remains unknown, police have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the fire.

No one was hurt.
