Fans from Ottawa witness history firsthand as Jays head to World Series

Baseball fans from Ottawa were among the Game 7 crowd that got to witness history as the Jays made it to the World Series. CTV’s Katelyn Wilson reports.

A packed Rogers Centre shook in the bottom of the seventh inning when George Springer launched a three-run home run, a swing that turned the tide in Game 7.

In the middle of it all, in a sea of blue and white, Alex Sirois and his friends who made the trip from Ottawa were there to capture it from the stands.

“I turned to my buddy, and I said Springer had a home run on the first pitch of the series and I’m like he’s going to do something big here, so he pulled out his cell phone and started recording and immediately next pitch he hit the home run,” Sirois said.

That home run gave the Jays the 4-3 lead that would win them the game, making it one of the biggest home runs in franchise history. With Jeff Hoffman securing the final three outs, the Jays were on to the World Series for the first time since 1993.

“It was electric. Just absolutely wild. And then, leaving the stadium was like mayhem; people just celebrating and dancing and great, great vibes everywhere,” said Sirois.

He’s not the only one who made the trek. Brett Jelley and his brother Chris scored last-minute tickets, witnessing a piece of Jays history firsthand.

“There was beer everywhere. Like, the whole section was soaking wet after. It was unbelievable! Coolest sports moment I’ve ever seen live by far,” said Chris.

In Ottawa, fans packed the Senate Tavern Monday night, celebrating a moment three decades in the making.

“I’ve had this [helmet] 33 years since the ‘92, ‘93 World Series and bottom of the seventh before the big home run by Springer I ran around the bar and made every single person in the bar tap the bucket,” said Jays fan Brenden Higgins.

But getting World Series tickets may take more than luck because prices are climbing fast.

On resale sites, standing room only for Friday’s game starts around $1,800 with some seats selling for nearly $10,000.

“We tried to log on 10 a.m., there were 60,000 in the queue. I heard other people get up to 100,000 to 200,000. God bless all the people who got them,” said Higgins.

Even without tickets, some say they’ll head back to Toronto anyway, just to be close to the action.

“We might try to get last minute tickets without a hotel, without vacation booked and stand outside until we try and get tickets,” said Jelley.
