Bonnechere Cup revs up for 50th anniversary, celebrating decades of speed and tradition

Eganville’s Bonnechere Cup is marking a major milestone. As CTV’s Josh Marano reports, the snowmobile race is celebrating 50 years of speed and tradition.

The roar of snowmobile engines echoed through the Ottawa Valley once again this weekend as one of Ontario’s coolest winter traditions marked a major milestone.

The Bonnechere Cup — often called the “fastest show on snow” — returned to Eganville, celebrating its 50th anniversary, drawing racers, families, and longtime fans to the frosty fairgrounds.

A chilly morning set the scene for what many say is perfect snowmobiling weather.

For longtime spectator Paul Scheel, there was no question about where he wanted to be.

“You don’t see this every day,” Scheel says, watching the races from the sidelines.

Scheel has been attending the Bonnechere Cup for years and says the anniversary made this year’s event especially meaningful — particularly because he was able to share the experience with his sons.

“Back in the day, I always made it and 50 years, had to come and check it out,” he says. “Lots of excitement, kids love that, it’s a great day.”

The mix of nostalgia and high-speed competition is exactly what keeps people coming back, including families, racers and veterans who have followed the event since its earliest days.

Race director Scott Clark says the event has become more than just a competition — it’s a tradition passed down through generations.

“It’s carrying on a ritual where our fathers and grandfathers started something that brings thousands and thousands of people into this area,” Clark says.

This year’s milestone anniversary also comes with some added incentives. Organizers putting up $50,000 in prize money to mark the occasion – a move that has attracted more drivers from across North America.

“To be put on the Bonnechere Cup as the 50th winner, that’s going to be something special,” Clark says.

Another new addition this year is a blue track, designed to improve safety for racers while maintaining the high-speed excitement fans expect.

Throughout the weekend, competition on the snow remained fierce but friendly, with cold conditions doing little to slow anyone down.

Racer Blaine Stephenson, who travelled from Minnesota to compete, says the atmosphere is part of what makes the Bonnechere Cup stand out.

“I’m from Minnesota, and we have fans that come just to see us – get autographs, take pictures,” Stephenson says. “That kind of thing really draws people back, they do a good job of treating the racers right and running a great venue.”

For veterans like Scheel — and newcomers experiencing the races for the first time — the Bonnechere Cup continues to bring people and communities together, one lap at a time.

“It’s pretty exciting for the Ottawa Valley,” Scheel says.
