Six wards currently only have one candidate registered for Ottawa’s municipal election this fall, with four weeks left for candidates to sign up for the race. Registration for the Oct. 26 municipal election opened on May 1, and candidates for mayor, councillor and school board trustee have until Aug. 21 to file their nomination forms. As of Friday afternoon, only one candidate is registered to run in six wards across Ottawa, and six councillors are currently running unopposed. In Orléans West-Innes, incumbent Laura Dudas is the only candidate registered to run in the election. The one candidate registered to run in Kanata North is Coun. Cathy Curry. In College Ward, Coun. Laine Johnson is the only candidate on the ballot. Coun. Riley Brockington is running unopposed in River Ward as of Friday. In Osgoode, first-term Coun. Isabelle Skalski is the only candidate registered. Skalski was elected in a byelection last year. First-term Coun. David Brown is the only candidate on the ballot in Rideau-Jock. In Rideau-Vanier, Coun. Stephanie Plante registered to run for re-election in the October municipal election on Friday. Former Ottawa-Carleton District School Board trustee Lyra Evans is also running in the ward. Two wards will have new councillors after the municipal election. Kitchissippi Coun. Jeff Leiper is running for mayor, while current Stittsville Coun. Glen Gower has said he will not be seeking re-election. There are eight candidates running for councillor in Stittsville, the highest number of candidates on the ballot. In Orléans East-Cumberland, there are seven candidates registered to run, including incumbent Matthew Luloff. The deadline to register for the municipal election or withdraw their nomination is 2 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 21.
