As the colder months begin to settle in across Saskatchewan, many golfers were out at Saskatoon’s Holiday Park Golf Course Sunday to squeeze in at least one more round before the end of the year. “Anything after Thanksgiving is a bonus, so we’ll take it,” Cole Fischer, a golfer, said. Fischer shared that during the golfing season, he tries to get out at least once a week to golf, which is often also an opportunity to spend time with friends. The sport also doubles as an opportunity to check out different courses within the province. “Usually within the city. But [it’s] always nice to get out to some of the smaller towns. Up to the lake is always nice. So I try and get out as much as we can,” Fischer said. Another golfer taking in the warm fall weather, Garett Cameron, said he and his friends were thankful for the opportunity to hit the course one last time for the year. “It is very nice. There’s been years where it’s been the middle of September and it’s hard to golf ... it’s just amazing going right now,” Cameron said. Cameron added that he spends many hours on golf courses throughout the spring and summer months. “It takes up a lot of time, probably 70 per cent of my time is golfing. We go after work all the time, and it’s hard to work a night shift and you have to go out and get some golf in. But once you get out here, it’s very good,” Cameron said. Across Saskatchewan, golf has been a popular way for folks to get outside and enjoy the warmer months. Fischer shared that the province’s passion for golf might be connected to the overarching love for sports. “I don’t know if it’s something to do with kind of the hockey trade-off. It’s always something to do in the off-season for hockey players. I’ve always done it. My grandpa started me on it,” Fischer said. Monday marks Holiday Park Golf Course’s last day of full operation for the season, and Cameron shared that he was grateful for the opportunity to get a final round in for the year. “Saskatchewan is just a great place. You got three months and... you get some wind, but it’s great weather, it’s awesome ... I’m just having a great time with the boys. It’s the end the year and you might as well get a round in,” Cameron said.
