‘Unfit’ commercial vehicle stopped doing 108 km/h in 60 km/h zone: OPP

A 20-year-old driver from Sudbury faces multiple charges after provincial police stopped a commercial vehicle for stunt driving on Highway 64.

Ontario Provincial Police say the traffic stop occurred in French River on March 21.

Police said the vehicle that was stopped was “unfit.”

“The vehicle was travelling 108 km/h in a posted 60 km/h zone,” OPP said in a social media post.

As a result of the incident and subsequent investigation, the driver was charged with stunt driving, operating an unsafe vehicle and failing to surrender a permit for a motor vehicle.

In addition to the charges, police impounded the vehicle for 14 days and the motorist’s driver’s licence was suspended for 30 days.

The accused now also has a future traffic court date in Ontario.

Court-imposed penalties for stunt driving may include a fine of up to $10,000, a driver’s licence suspension of up to three years and/or up to six months in jail. Drivers face a minimum first-time fine for stunt driving of $2,000 upon conviction. Motorist convicted of stunt driving may also face six demerit points, higher insurance costs and a mandatory driver improvement course.
