Two pedestrians killed in separate crashes in Sudbury on Wednesday morning

Sudbury police are investigating two fatal pedestrian collisions within 90 minutes. One was a hit-and-run on Maley Drive; the other driver remained.

Two pedestrians were killed in separate, unrelated collisions within a 90-minute span in Greater Sudbury on Wednesday morning, prompting a detailed police investigation into the role weather and pre-dawn darkness may have played.

Back-to-Back fatal crashes

The first incident occurred around 4:40 a.m. at the corner of Lasalle Boulevard and Attlee Avenue.

The Greater Sudbury Police Service said the driver involved remained on scene.

The victim, a 39-year-old woman, was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries and was later pronounced deceased.

“The identity of that individual is not going to be released at this time just in order to protect the privacy of the family that are involved in this tragic incident,” said Insp. Robert Norman.

Just before 6:15 a.m., police were called to the Maley Drive extension near the on-ramp from Notre Dame Avenue after a motorist discovered a body on the roadway.

That victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Norman confirmed the vehicle involved initially fled but later contacted police.

“The vehicle in that situation left the scene but later contacted police and police are now following up to find out the circumstance to find out how that incident took place,” Norman said.

Police were not able to provide details on the second victim’s identity.

Weather, road conditions part of active probe

The back-to-back fatalities are being investigated by the police service’s integrated traffic safety unit, supported by the forensics team and the coroner. Norman said the investigations will scrutinize all factors, including the rainy conditions and low light at the time of the collisions.

“What we know is that the weather today included rain, approximately five degrees,” Norman said.

“So, all of those things are taken into account by the investigators and part of the reconstruction process.”

The inspector emphasized the gravity of the work, saying, “We have a tragic loss of life and it’s very important that the police and the coroner we do our job and we do it right because the results are important.”

Charges possible

Police said charges could be laid in either case, but those decisions won’t be known until the investigations progress.
