Ontario Provincial Police in Sioux Lookout have laid second-degree murder charges in relation to an infant’s death last spring.

The charges relate to a May 9 incident. Police responded just before 8 a.m. to a report of an unresponsive five-month-old baby on Sturgeon River Road.

“The infant was transported to hospital by emergency medical services and later pronounced deceased,” police said in a news release Thursday.

Following a “thorough investigation,” a 26-year-old from Sandy Lake First Nation was charged with second-degree murder and failing to provide the necessaries of life.

The accused remains in custody and was scheduled to appear virtually before the Ontario Court of Justice in Dryden at some point on Thursday.
