Sudbury Airport to offer flights to Ottawa and Montreal, 6 days a week

Propair set to launch direct Sudbury-Ottawa flights six days a week. Lyndsay Aelick has the latest.

Propair is preparing for takeoff in Greater Sudbury, where it will soon offer flights to and from Ottawa, Montreal and Quebec City.

The flights will operate every day except Saturday, leaving at 6:30 a.m. and returning at 9:10 p.m. beginning Oct. 27.

Giovanna Verrilli, Greater Sudbury Airport CEO, said flights to both cities are among the most requested by the airport’s customers.

“So the fact that we can now deliver that service six days a week, morning and evening, is a huge win for the travelling public and the community at large,” Verrilli said.

Propair CEO Justin Lemieux said the airline uses Beechcraft 1900 planes, which seat 18 people.

“The aircraft is really made for this type of operation,” Lemieux said.

“It’s a one-hour flight (to Ottawa). It’s a really fast and comfortable aircraft.”

Officials said the new flights are a significant step in boosting regional connectivity and providing Greater Sudbury’s business community with quick and convenient travel options.

They also fill a void in early morning departures and evening arrivals in Sudbury.

“We really think that passengers will appreciate their experience,” Lemieux said.

“And as we are using (a private terminal) facility out of Montreal, Ottawa and Quebec City, it’s really fast. So people will avoid long ... delays at main terminals.”

Increasing service

While some northern airports are seeing airlines scale back services, Sudbury officials said that’s not the case here.

“We’re all facing the same challenges from a regional perspective, but for Sudbury airport, our focus has been air service development and ensuring that we are able to work with airline partners to increase and improve the level of service for our community,” Verrilli said.

“Sudbury is a great market (and) airlines recognize that there is an opportunity to grow their business in our environment.”

Pre-COVID-19 pandemic, Sudbury’s airport saw close to 270,000 passengers per year.

So far in 2025, the airport has had 140,000 passengers, but Verrilli said she expected significant growth in those numbers in the years to come.
