Sault Ste. Marie man charged with assaulting police officers

A 27-year-old man is in custody facing multiple charges, including aggravated assault of a peace officer, after an early morning incident that began with a vehicle crashing into a building.

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service says the event began around 2:30 a.m. on Wednesday when 911 operators received a report that a vehicle had struck a building in the 100 block of Churchill Boulevard, causing “significant damage.”

“It was reported the driver ran away from the scene,” police said in a news release.

Altercation erupts during arrest attempt

An investigation led officers to the accused’s residence. Police said that when officers attempted to place the man under arrest, he became aggressive.

“The accused resisted by grabbing officers, pulling away, and refusing to comply with verbal commands,” the police service wrote in the release. “During their arrest, the accused bit two officers – causing serious physical injuries to one – and spit on another officer.”

Multiple charges laid

As a result, the 27-year-old local has been charged with aggravated assault of a peace officer, two counts of assaulting a peace officer, resisting a peace officer and breach of recognizance.

He was held in custody pending a bail hearing.

“The investigation into the motor vehicle collision is ongoing,” said police.
