Sault man on probation accused in hospital bomb threat case

A 34-year-old man faces charges including mischief and uttering threats after a fake bomb threat was called in to Sault Area Hospital earlier this month.

A 34-year-old man has been charged in connection with a bomb threat that caused “significant disruption” at Sault Area Hospital earlier this month.

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service announced the arrest in a news release on Monday.

The incident began on the evening of Sept. 10, when 911 operators received a call from a person claiming to have left a bomb at the hospital at about 9:15 p.m.

“The hospital activated emergency protocols – causing significant disruption to hospital operations – and officers were dispatched to the scene,” said police in a news release.

The threat was later determined to be false.

Following an investigation, police identified a suspect and obtained a warrant for their arrest.

Suspect located and charged

Police located the accused in the 700 block of Wellington Street East at approximately 2:35 a.m. on Sept. 22.

The local man faces charges of mischief, public mischief, uttering threats to damage property and failure to comply with a probation order.

The accused was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
