Police arrest 18-year-old in downtown Sudbury homicide

Arrest made after downtown Sudbury stabbing WATCH: An 18-year-old has been arrested for homicide in connection to a stabbing which took place Friday in downtown Sudbury.

SUDBURY -- An arrest has been made in Sudbury’s first homicide of the year.

Members of the Greater Sudbury Police Service Criminal Investigations Division took an 18-year-old male into custody Saturday morning.

It stems from a stabbing Friday at the corner of Cedar and Young Streets.

“Yesterday morning at approximately 10:30 we received a call of a weapons complaint on Cedar Street, upon arrival officers found a 17-year-old male who required medical attention. He was taken to Health Sciences North where he subsequently succumbed to his injuries,” said Inspector John Somerset.

Police had originally tweeted Friday that this was a stabbing. Somerset couldn’t release anything about the murder weapon.

Somerset says officers immediately began a homicide investigation. They interviewed witnesses and obtained CCTV footage.

The scene left Cedar Street blocked off for several hours.

“Officers were able to identify the accused in this incident as an 18-year-old male, at this time we’re not able to release his name as the information has now been sworn to and the accused has not appeared in court yet,” said Somerset.

The accused and victim were known to each other. In terms of a motive, all police could say was this was a dispute between two individuals.

“This is a major investigation for any service, including ours, we worked throughout the night hours using all aspects of our police service ... this is the very beginning of what might be a lengthy prosecution,” he said.

“Police do believe this was not a random act of violence, it was a dispute between two individuals. There’s not threat to the public or to the area of the incident,” Somerset added.

Investigators are not releasing the name of the victim as per the family’s wishes.

The suspect is scheduled to appear in bail court on Sunday.
