Pedestrian killed after being hit by train in Sudbury

CTV News received multiple reports of a train striking a pedestrian, shutting down several Elm Street crossings in downtown Sudbury on Friday.

The Greater Sudbury Police Service confirmed Saturday that a pedestrian died after being struck by a train in the city’s downtown core on Friday evening, prompting hours-long road closures.

The incident occurred just before 8 p.m. on June 12 along the rail crossing on Elm Street between Pine Street and Frood Road.

Police announced area closures on social media at about 8:30 p.m.

“Please find alternative routes,” police wrote.

The scene led to major traffic disruptions for anyone trying to get past the rail tracks.

Police confirm fatality

Initial reports from the scene suggested a train had struck a pedestrian, though that information had not been immediately confirmed by first responders on Friday evening.

Staff Sgt. Derick Rose of the Greater Sudbury Police Service, in an email to CTV News early Saturday afternoon, confirmed the crash.

“Unfortunately, there was a pedestrian struck by a train, who succumbed (sic) to the injuries suffered, that prompted the area closures during the investigation,” Rose wrote.

Rose explained that the victim, a man, was taken to Health Sciences North by paramedics and was pronounced deceased at the hospital.

The collision did not take place at a legal crossing. Police said the man was struck at Frood Road at Pine Street, north of the legal crossing at Elm Street.

No further details about the victim have been released.

Investigation ongoing

The road closure lasted just under two hours, with the police service stating the area had reopened shortly after 10:15.

“The investigation is being headed by our Integrated Traffic Safety Unit and is still on going,” said Rose.

Investigators are asking anyone with information to contact police.

“There will be a further media release once the investigation is concluded,” added Rose.
