Ontario Provincial Police are warning the public to be vigilant after a counterfeit $100 bill was used at a grocery store in Elliot Lake.

OPP said they received a report on Wednesday that a fake bill had been passed at a grocery store on Highway 108.

Investigators determined the counterfeit currency was used sometime on March 17.

“Unfortunately, there was insufficient evidence to identify a suspect in the case,” the OPP said in a news release Wednesday.

Police have released images (shown below) of the bill in question and are asking residents to educate themselves on how to spot fake currency.

“This can serve as a reminder to be mindful of potential counterfeits,” said police.

The OPP advise residents to inspect bills carefully, looking for specific markers that distinguish authentic polymer notes from counterfeits.

Feel the bill

• Real notes are smooth polymer (plastic), not paper.
• Raised ink is present on the portrait, large “100”, and “Bank of Canada.”
• If it feels flimsy, too smooth, or layers peel, it’s likely fake.

Check the transparent window

• Should be part of the bill, not glued on.
• Contains a clear, detailed metallic portrait and building (not blurry).
• Look through the small maple leaf window at a light where a hidden “100” appears.

Tilt the bill

• Metallic features should change colour (e.g. gold to green).
• The portrait and building should look the same on both sides of the window.

Look closely at details

• Tiny text and numbers should be sharp and clear, not fuzzy.
• Watch for “prop money” or similar wording, as this is a giveaway.
• Poor print quality equals likely counterfeit.

Serial numbers

• Multiple bills with the same serial number are suspicious.

What to do if you suspect a fake

Police advise anyone who believes they have been offered counterfeit currency to take specific steps.

• Don’t return it to the person.
• Politely refuse it and ask for another.
• Report or turn it in to police.
