Ont. man charged with stunt driving after clocked going 104 km/h in 60 km/h zone

A late-night drive in Thunder Bay resulted in stunt driving charges for a 49-year-old local man after provincial police clocked his vehicle travelling 44 km/h over the limit.

Ontario Provincial Police stopped the vehicle at about 11:10 p.m. on Feb. 22, OPP Const. Joel Eppinghaus confirmed in an email to CTV News on Sunday.

Police said observing the driver travelling 104 km/h in a posted 60 km/h zone in the area of Chippewa Road near Mountain Road.

Eppinghaus took to social media following the incident, offering a colourful description of the driver’s encounter with law enforcement.

“Fast & Furious? Correct... Pretty furious actually... Especially after being caught red handed driving 104 in a posted 60 km/h and having your vehicle impounded,” Eppinghaus wrote.

“The driver was subsequently charged with stunt driving,” OPP confirmed in the post.

In Ontario, stunt driving includes driving 40 km/h or more over the speed limit on roads with a posted limit of 80 km/h or under. The offence also covers dangerous behaviours such as racing and intentionally cutting off other vehicles.

The charge carries severe and immediate penalties.

In addition to the charge, OPP impounded the vehicle for 14 days and the driver’s licence was suspended for 30 days.

The accused now also has a future traffic court date in Ontario.

Court-imposed penalties for stunt driving may include a fine of up to $10,000, a driver’s licence suspension of up to three years and/or up to six months in jail. Drivers face a minimum first-time fine for stunt driving of $2,000 upon conviction. Motorist convicted of stunt driving may also face six demerit points, higher insurance costs and a mandatory driver improvement course.
