More renewable energy planned for Kenora in Northwestern Ont.

A 50/50 partnership west of Dryden will provide renewable energy in the Kenora area with a target date by 2030.

The province’s independent electricity system operator has awarded a 20-year capacity contract to Neoen and Eagle Lake First Nation for a new, 190 Megawatt eight-hour battery, the company said in a news release Tuesday.

“This eight-hour battery represents an important step in expanding battery storage capacity in Ontario, while building a partnership rooted in respect, collaboration and shared benefits,” director Benoit Pinot de Villechenon of Neoen Ontario said in a news release June 23.

“The project will store energy during periods of lower demand and release it back to the grid during peak usage, helping ensure power is available when it is needed most.”

“As we move forward together, Eagle Lake First Nation remains committed to ensuring this project is developed in a way that respects our traditional values, culture, and relationship with the land,” said Chief Bernadette Wabange of the Eagle Lake First Nation.

Construction of the project is to begin in two years.

Neoen said it also has agreements in place with other Ontario First Nations in Garden River and Matachewan.
