Manitoulin man killed in multi-vehicle collision involving fuel truck

A 33-year-old Manitoulin Island man has been identified by CTV News as the driver killed in a serious multi-vehicle crash on Highway 540 last week that closed the roadway for approximately 14 hours.

Kyle Bond was pronounced deceased at the scene on the evening of Nov. 13, following the collision that involved three passenger vehicles and the commercial motor vehicle he was driving.

Investigation ongoing

The incident occurred in the area of Highway 540 and Concession Road 8 at about 5:30 p.m.

“OPP, the UCCM Police, paramedics and fire department responded to a four-vehicle collision involving three passenger vehicles and a commercial motor vehicle,” said OPP in a news release.

Police said a second driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital.

The two other drivers were not injured.

OPP’s traffic incident management and enforcement team and technical collision investigators attended the scene to help with the investigation.

“Further updates will be provided as information becomes available,” said police.

Police said the investigation into the crash remains ongoing.

Community mourns ‘kind soul’

Bond, who was born in New Brunswick, is remembered in an obituary as a “kind soul with a smile that lifted the spirit of anyone who saw it.”

An avid outdoorsman, “he loved being in a boat on the open water and sharing his love of anything outdoors with anyone who would listen or join him.”

He is survived by his wife, Chanelle (Hass) Bond, whom the obituary describes as his “soulmate from the first time Kyle saw her.” He also leaves behind his dog, Moose.

The obituary said Bond “will be forever cherished by all who knew him.”

Fundraiser established for widow

An online fundraising campaign has been initiated by Ashleigh Moffat on behalf of Bond’s widow.

“We, her work family at Mindemoya Dental Centre, are setting up this GoFundMe on behalf of our dear friend, who is facing the unimaginable pain of losing her husband so suddenly,” wrote Moffat, a friend and colleague of Chanelle, on the fundraising page.

The fundraiser is intended to support Chanelle as she navigates her loss.

Visitation for Kyle Bond is scheduled for Nov. 20 at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, with a funeral service to be held on Nov. 21.
