Manitoulin Island man faces numerous charges including assault, kidnapping

A 63-year-old local man is facing dozens of charges following the execution of a search warrant this week in M’Chigeeng First Nation.

The UCCM Anishnaabe Police Service, with assistance from its canine unit and the Ontario Provincial Police, conducted the search at a residence in the community on March 16.

Weapons, drugs seized

One individual was taken into custody during the operation.

“As a result of the search, officers seized several weapons, including loaded firearms, as well as a quantity of cocaine,” the First Nation police service said in a news release.

Charges laid

The accused, a man from M’Chigeeng First Nation, has been charged with numerous offences stemming from an ongoing investigation.

The charges include assault, assault involving choking or strangulation, uttering threats, aggravated assault, and assault with a weapon.

Further charges include possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, careless use and storage of a firearm, use of a firearm while committing an offence, dangerous operation of a vehicle, kidnapping, forcible confinement, mischief and drug possession.

“The UCCM Anishnaabe Police Service reminds the public that violence of this nature is taken seriously, and incidents should be reported to police,” the service said.

Anyone with information related to the investigation is asked to contact the UCCM Anishnaabe Police Service.

The accused was held for a bail hearing.
