Hells Angels to gather in Sudbury on June 27

Police in Sudbury advise of possible traffic disruptions over the weekend as Hells Angels gather for a memorial for former Olympic boxer Phil Boudreault.

Police in Greater Sudbury are advising residents to expect traffic disruptions June 27 because of a Hells Angels Motorcycle Club memorial ride.

“The gathering is being held in memory of an individual with ties to the HAMC,” police said in a news release June 24.

“Police are aware of the event and are working closely with the Ontario Provincial Police-led biker enforcement unit and local OPP members to ensure a coordinated and informed policing response.”

Det. Staff Sgt. Darin Heffern told CTV News that community safety is their top priority.

“The police’s responsibility is to make sure that all people are safe, whether it is those who are assembling and those who are not,” Heffern said.

“Whether the group is controversial or, you know, suspected to be involved in crime, we respect people’s right to assemble together. And our goal here is to keep the public safe and to allow for the event to go off without a hitch.”

The news release said there will be a visible police presence throughout the day to “support real-time monitoring, allow for immediate response to any public safety concerns and assist with traffic management.”

In town June 26-28

Expect to see groups of motorcycles driving together wearing club colours from June 26-28. There will also be a heightened police presence in certain areas of the city, including Valley East and the West End.

Temporary traffic delays or disruptions may occur during the ride along the Kingsway, downtown core and MR80 between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on June 27.

“Officers will work to minimize impacts and keep traffic moving safely,” police said.

Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and follow directions from police.

Residents “are reminded not to engage with or confront individuals associated with outlaw motorcycle gangs,” police said.

“At this time, there is no indication of a specific threat to public safety related to this event. Police do not prevent lawful gatherings, and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms protects freedom of assembly – even in cases where participants may be associated with controversial or criminally-linked groups.”

“Our role is to ensure public safety and enforce the law where necessary. Anyone with information related to criminal activity involving outlaw motorcycle gangs is encouraged to contact police or Crime Stoppers anonymously,” police added.
