Driver stopped going 119km/h in a 70/km/h zone on Hwy. 11 charged with impaired

Ontario Provincial Police have charged a driver with multiple offences, including impaired operation, after a traffic stop on a northern Ontario highway last week.

“Ontario Provincial Police observed a motor vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed on Highway 11, near Geraldton, Ont.,” OPP said in a social media post.

Police said the vehicle was recorded travelling 119km/h in a 70km/h zone at about 1 p.m. on Sept. 2.

As a result of the incident and subsequent investigation, the driver faces a stunt driving charge. In addition to the stunt driving charge, the driver faces additional charges of impaired driving, failing or refusing to comply with a demand and for driving with cannabis and liquor readily available.

Stunt driving penalties and enforcement

“OPP is committed to safety for all who utilize Ontario’s roadways,” said police.

In Ontario, stunt driving includes driving 40 km/h or more over the speed limit on roads with a posted limit under 80 km/h. The offence also covers dangerous behaviours such as racing and intentionally cutting off other vehicles.

Additionally, under provincial traffic laws, with a stunt driving charge, the vehicle involved is impounded for 14 days at the owner’s expense and the driver’s licence is suspended for 30 days, as in this incident.

Police urge public to report unsafe driving

“Members of the public are urged to report impaired, aggressive or careless driving by calling 911 in emergency situations,” said OPP. “Complaints of impaired, aggressive or careless driving can also be made by calling 1-888-310-1122.”
