Driver charged in fatal February Highway 17 crash

Ontario Provincial Police say a 67-year-old man from Sault Ste. Marie has now been charged in relation to a fatal single-vehicle crash on Highway 17.

OPP responded to the crash on the Highway 17 bypass in Greater Sudbury at about 1 a.m. on Feb. 2.

The two occupants of the vehicle were transported to the local hospital.

“A 74-year-old female passenger from Sault Ste. Marie, who sustained life-threatening injuries, … was later pronounced deceased at the hospital,” OPP said in a news release.

The driver received what police described as “non-life-threatening injuries.”

As a result of the investigation, the driver, a 67-year-old man also from Sault Ste. Marie, has been charged with dangerous operation causing death.

The accused is scheduled to appear in court in Sudbury on Sept. 16.
