Construction at city hall in Sudbury forces relocation of court to Azilda

Greater Sudbury’s provincial offences court moves to Azilda on Sept. 29 due to the construction of the city's new cultural hub.

Construction of the Cultural Hub at Tom Davies Square is forcing provincial offences court to move to the Lionel E. Lalonde Centre in Azilda for two years beginning Sept. 29.

Work on the project will also affect city council and committee meetings to move, with more details to be announced later, the city said this week.

Provincial offences court hearings are normally held during the day in room C-11.

“This temporary move is necessary to advance the Cultural Hub project, an initiative that will bring together key cultural and community services in a centralized, accessible location,” the city said in a news release.

“Every effort is being made to ensure uninterrupted access to municipal services during construction. Most services will continue to be offered at Tom Davies Square as usual. Updates will be provided if there are any changes to service locations.”

Virtual court will continue

The Lionel E. Lalonde Centre is located at 239 Montée Principale in Azilda. The city said virtual court appearances will continue to be available.

“The provincial offences administration office will remain at 199 Larch St., Suite 102, where ticket administration and payments will continue to be processed as usual,” the release said.

The city’s GOVA transit system will adjust Route 104 Azilda–Chelmsford starting Aug. 23 to improve access to the new court location.

“There will be impacts to council and committee meetings as part of the construction,” city spokesperson April Low said in an email.

“The public will be advised in the coming weeks on the timing and logistics.”

Provincial offences court handles matters such as traffic violations, bylaw infractions, parking offences and provincial ministry offences through the Ontario Court of Justice.
