Centre for Life celebrates 25th anniversary in downtown Sudbury

Centre for Life marked its 25th anniversary Tuesday. The Sudbury hub, home to the YMCA and health programs, was hailed as a key facility for community wellness.

The Centre for Life in downtown Greater Sudbury celebrated a significant milestone on Tuesday morning as it marked its 25th anniversary.

The Durham Street facility, built in the heart of downtown in the year 2000, has long served as a unique community hub. It is home to a diverse group of tenants, including the YMCA, a day care, The Parkside Older Adult Centre and the Health Sciences North Cardiac and Pulmonary Program, creating an inclusive and vibrant space that supports people at every stage of life.

Visionary model for integrated services

The centre’s founding concept was to unite essential community services under one roof, a model that has proven its value over time. The YMCA stands as the largest tenant within the building.

“25 years ago, this was a groundbreaking concept to bring partners together under one roof. It has been resilient. It has been relevant to the community and it will be for the future,” said YMCA of Northeastern Ontario president & CEO Lorrie Turnbull.

Comprehensive care

The facility offers a wide spectrum of health and wellness services. HSN operates a referral-based cardiac and pulmonary program on an upper floor, while the Parkside Older Adult Centre provides a dedicated space for older adults.

“In one facility, you have all the health and wellness needs addressed for people, as you know, from infants all the way to seniors,” said John Richer, manager of the older adult centre.

“It is a great facility and we are all doing our part to make the city a little bit better.”

Recognizing peacekeepers

The anniversary celebration also included a moment of recognition for community policing. Sgt. Matt Hall of the Greater Sudbury Police Service was awarded a YMCA peace medal award for his work in building relationships, fostering trust and addressing downtown challenges with compassion and professionalism.

Hall elaborated on the collaborative nature of his team’s daily efforts to maintain safety and trust in the community.

“You know we have to develop and maintain those relationships, so there is a lot of work that goes into that,” he said.

“The team, I have the eight officers and two clinicians from HSN, you know, we go out every day in the downtown core.”

Officials concluded that the anniversary is a celebration of the Centre for Life’s profound and lasting impact on the community, affirming its continued role as a cornerstone for the revitalization and revival of downtown Sudbury.
