Longueuil Mayor Catherine Fournier re-elected

Pregnant and ready, Catherine Fournier looks forward to a second term as Longueuil mayor.

Longueuil Mayor Catherine Fournier has been reelected for a second term with 88.8 per cent of the vote.

Her opponent, Sacha Parisella (Agora Longueuil), garnered 11.2 per cent of votes.

The announcement came just minutes after polls closed at 8 p.m. on Sunday.

Originally, expectations were that Fournier would be acclaimed, but Parisella officially threw his hat into the ring on Oct. 3.

In her victory speech, Fournier said what started as a wave of support for her Coalition Longueuil team turned into a tsunami.

“It’s very important for me to do the work,” said Fournier. “I think people expect that of us, and I want to reach the level of expectation that I have for myself, for my team, but also from the population that we represent.”

The 33-year-old was first elected mayor of Longueuil in the 2021 election with a little over 61 per cent of the vote.

She was previously a member of the National Assembly in Quebec City, having been elected at the age of 24 in a by-election in Marie-Victorin with the Parti Québécois (PQ), before quitting to sit as an independent.

She was the youngest woman ever elected at the provincial level.
