Quebec’s police watchdog is investigating after a person was seriously injured during an intervention with the Montreal police service on Friday. According to the Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes (BEI), officers were dealing with a person in crisis in a public place at around noon and tried to subdue the individual with handcuffs. The person suffered a “medical episode” and was given first aid before paramedics arrived on scene, the bureau said in a news release. “The person was transported to a hospital where their condition is considered serious,” the BEI said. Six investigators from the BEI have been tasked with investigating the circumstances surrounding the intervention and a parallel investigation has also been launched by the Sûreté du Québec. The BEI did not release any further details about the incident.
