Quebec’s education system ‘is not broken,’ says minister

Quebec’s education minister says she doesn’t intend to “completely overhaul the education system” because, in her opinion, it is “not broken.”

Sonia LeBel made the statement on Tuesday at the National Assembly as opposition parties questioned her about her priorities.

Two months into her term, LeBel stated that she had no “major priorities to announce.”

Instead, she says she plans to focus her efforts on “calming” the system, given that “100,000 students” have been added “since 2018” and Quebec’s budgetary situation is “difficult for everyone.”

“I won’t be able to resolve all the issues,” she said, adding that she wants to “improve students’ lives with the resources we have.”

Earlier in the morning, Québec Solidaire education critic Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois held a press conference to call for “emergency funds” to “send reinforcements to schools.”

“There is an economic update coming. We need urgent reinvestment to add people to our schools to take care of the children,” he said.

Nadeau-Dubois lamented that an “exodus” in education would be “far more disastrous for Quebec” than “the alleged exodus of a few dozen doctors.”
